What' the meaning behind Kushe

Kushe’ is a formal greeting originating from Sierra Leone and neighboring countries in West Africa. Kushe’ can mean hello, welcome, greetings, good dealings, or well done depending on the connation used. Kushe’ Magazine translates to “Welcome to our Magazine”.In this context, we extend a warm and friendly Kushe’ to our readers around the world.

When was the magazine founded?

Kushe’ Magazine was founded in October 2012 to create a platform whereby the actions and achievements of the people of Sierra Leone and broader African nationalities can be disseminated to a world-wide audience.

Why was the magazine founded?

With a 10-year civil war in Sierra Leone, West Africa which spanned from 1991 – 2002 and stalled the development of a promising country, Kushe’ Magazine was formed to shed light on the progressive image of Sierra Leoneans.Kushe’ has expanded its purpose to capture the good work that African men, women, and children around the world are engaged in every day. In each issue, stories capture the likes of Faith Okrafo-Smart, Founder of Melqosh Mission. In Faith’s inspirational story, her organization rekindles the lives of war afflicted amputees who are remnants of the 10-year war in Sierra Leone. Kushe’ introduced the story of Michaela DePrince, now a world-renowned ballerina who was adopted from a Sierra Leone orphanage by American parents at the tender age of four. Kushe’ presented the topic of disability and mental health among Africans. We shared what African’s think about former United States President Barak Obama. The artwork of award winning Sierra Leonean Artist Richard Garrick was revealed as Kushe’ told his story of artistic aggression displayed through exquisite works of art. Interviews with the hottest African artists, articles on sports, business, lifestyle, and politics are all part of Kushe’s vision to bring the voice of the talented and influential African progressive to life.

After the successful online distribution of Kushe’ Magazine’s Volume 1 in April 2013 and Volume 2 in December 2013, the official launch celebration was held on March 7, 2014 in Washington, D.C., USA.
